PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE
PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE
A Professor of Practice (PoP) is a distinguished person with sound professional knowledge and an excellent track record in industry, business domain, or even government services, appointed in the field of academia for a fixed tenure under certain terms and conditions. In simple words, it is an appointment of a member of a profession as a member in the academic field to bring in real-life knowledge from industry to the students. The National Education Policy 2020, released by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on September 30, 2022, issues guidelines for engaging Professor of Practice in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). General conditions are:
The engagement of Professor of Practice will be for a fixed term.
The engagement of Professor of Practice will be exclusive of the sanctioned posts of a university/ college. It will not affect the number of sanctioned posts and the recruitment of regular faculty members.
Professor of Practice is not open for those in teaching profession - serving or retired.
The goal is to create a win-win situation for both industry and academia. There is no shortage of knowledgeable professionals in the industry, both domestically and internationally. Many highly qualified and technically experienced individuals are available. However, a few are interested in joining academia for various reasons, including personal preferences, lack of time, differing inclinations, and mismatched honorarium expectations. Additionally, expertise in a subject does not necessarily translate to effective teaching. A professional may have extensive experience, but conveying that knowledge to students in a classroom setting can be challenging.
Kumar, with a strong inclination towards academia and extensive experience in international business and global supply chains, presents a notable example. After over 30 years of service in both public and private sectors across India and Africa, he accepted an invitation from the academic world and transitioned to academia. His lectures, which seamlessly blend theoretical knowledge with real-life experiences, captivate students. Consequently, he quickly became a popular Professor of Practice.
