Sonia Gandhi is an Italian-born Indian politician. While she was studying English at a language school in Cambridge, she  met charming and handsome Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv was the elder son of Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. They got married in 1968.

After Sanjay Gandhi, his brother, died in a plane crash in 1980, Rajiv entered Indian politics reluctantly at the behest of Indira Gandhi. After the assassination of his mother on October 31, 1984, he took over as Prime Minister of India. At the age of 40 he became the youngest Indian Prime Minister (1984 to 1989). 

On May 21, 1991 while addressing a public meeting at Sriperumbudur, a village approximately 40 km (25 mile) from Chennai (formerly Madras), he was assassinated by a woman named Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
